VOLUMES OF SERENITY
As I walk through a space, my eyes and ears take in the space, while my body feels the emotional sensation that the space creates for me. Light allows us to see beauty in the world, but the absence of light can be just as beautiful.

One who journeys through this space will experience a dynamic element of surprise. The play of light and shadow creates a changing experience as one moves from one volume to the next. The time of day also alters the experience, as when the sun rises, it moves through the sky and then sets into darkness once again. Nature provides a continuous cycle that this space celebrates.

The darkest point resides within the bluff and limited light streams in. The journey of entering is formulated with surprise, through the turning corners within narrow corridors. Emphasis is placed on sound, as water cascades down from the roof in the center. There is also a quality of touch; one can run their hand along the rough surface of the rocks that enclose this space.

The central and tallest volume of space depicts a medium quality of light. Light and shadow form dynamic linear elements that shift throughout the day. Once again, there is a sense of sound through water, as well as vegetation to contribute to the feeling of serenity. The immense size of this space creates a sense of emptiness and peace.

The most illuminated spaces are the open-air courtyard on the north end and the rooftop areas. Sun directly touches the surfaces, and there is a connection to air, sky and wind. A gentle stream of water flows into a bed within the depressed plane within the courtyard.

Throughout these volumes of space, one feels in harmony, due to the juxtaposition of geometric planes with the natural world. The broken connection of perpendicular planes creates a journey from one volume to the next, with opportunities for exploration and discovery. This space is a place of reflection. One can notice the beauty of the natural world and the physical sensations it provides.
